Hooray for San Francisco
I always knew SF was a cool place. And the actions of the new mayor over the weekend just prove it to me all over again.
My friend ChrisL (English teacher extraordinaire) pointed me to this great website which has a gallery of photos taken over the weekend at City Hall. There are some absolutely amazing pictures in this gallery, and they all brought tears to my eyes. The one that Chris pointed out, and that I adore too, is one of two older gentlemen coming out of City Hall looking a little shell shocked. They must be in their 50s or 60s. You've got to figure that they're one of the many couples who have been together for decades, and jumped at the chance to finally, FINALLY make their union legal. I heard tales of two ladies who had been together for 50 years. There aren't even a lot of hetero marriages that last that long.
C'mon America, loosen up a bit. We can't discriminate based on sexual preference anymore, and that includes marriage. Many hetero couples have been ruining marriage for years now, really. All we have to do is look at sky-rocketing divorce rates, all the "who wants to marry a..." reality shows, Britney Spears, and a host of others to show how the supposed "sanctity" of marriage has really been harmed in this country. I think it needs an infusion of new blood and happiness.
And I think that more scenes like this, this, this, and this are just what the doctor ordered.
